Kids are Almost Never Too Young to Start Flossing

Even as a baby, your child’s beautiful smile starts with careful attention to oral health. While brushing is certainly important, it’s not enough to ensure the best results. Plaque, bacteria and food accumulate between teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach. Flossing is the only way to be certain that tooth enamel is protected from the acids that cause decay. If you know how to floss teeth properly, you have the skills to give your child the best chance of enjoying a lifetime of good oral health.

Yes, Baby Teeth Matter

Baby teeth are only present for a few years, but even though they are temporary, they play an important role in your child’s development. Besides being a functional set of training teeth, they serve as placeholders for the adult teeth that eventually replace them. Your child’s first set of teeth contributes to proper jaw formation. If they are lost too early, adult teeth may not have a large enough space to erupt. Taking care of baby teeth also prevents infections that could lead to oral health issues or illness in the rest of the body.

When to Start Flossing

When two baby teeth have grown large enough to touch each other, a toothbrush is no longer enough—it’s time to start flossing. Until your child is about nine years old, you’ll need to help. Little hands lack the coordination for flossing effectively on their own. By nine years old, most kids can handle dental floss without help. Plastic flossers may be easier for children to handle when they are first learning how to floss teeth correctly. Due to the dangers of swallowing mouthwash, you shouldn’t add it to your child’s dental care routine until he or she reaches six years of age.

Be sure to schedule regular dental appointments for your child, so any potential oral health issues can be addressed early.
